roots below v0.2.1 includes several improvements and fixes, namely a lot of UI tweaks and hinting. On top of that, Status Effects exist now and several are implemented. Look forward to many more in the future! See the full notes below for more

what’s next?

I’ve got several updates planned in the near/mid future:

  • v0.3 Talismans - Support for more status effects, cards, and enemies. Support for Talismans which grant buffs that last your entire run. Ideally, allow unlocking Talismans via completing runs, and alow selection of a talisman at the start of the run
  • v0.4 Shrines - Ramping up the rogue elements by approximately 1000%. This update will be a doozy! It’ll be all about randomization of runs:
    • generating randomized layout of stages for the run
    • randomizing enemy spawns
    • adding special events (shrines) that will give you opportunities to Heal, gain cards, or maybe even remove some cards
  • v.0.5 ART - This update will focus on improving the art and sound to give roots below a more finished feel
    • unique card and status effect art - no more reusing the same hastily doodled “X” for half the cards
    • reworked sound
    • initial soundtrack
    • visual effects and UI improvements
  • ??? - refine exposition & story, polish, maybe get things ready for a proper 1.0 release!

v0.2.1 Notes

New features

  • Status Effects: Statuses can be applied to the player or to enemies and can change interactions. Currently there are 3 in the game:
    • Vulnerable entities inflicted with Vulnerable take 25% more damage for a number of turns
    • Confounded randomizes the costs of cards for a number of turns
    • Strength increases damage until the end of combat. Stacks - having a strength counter of 4 means you deal 4 extra damage on each attack
  • New Cards:
    • Preparation Costs 2, Grants 2 Strength until the end of combat
    • Flash of Light Costs 2, Inflicts 2 Vulnerable on all enemies
  • Special abilities:
    • Alongside Summon, the boss can (and will!) inflict Confounded on you, randomizing the cost of your cards for 2 turns

Improvements

  • UI
    • Cards you can’ afford to play now are grayed out
    • Added support for flashing messages at the top of the screen, eg: “Not enough energy” if you try to select a card that’s too expensive
    • Status effects can be hovered over and a description of the status will be flashed at the top of the screen
    • Cards that inflict statuses will flash a description when hovered
    • On the rewards screen, the selected reward will “bump” up so it’s easier to see what you have selected

Bugfixes

  • You can no longer spam click on enemies to deal attack damage multiple times. bad players! bad!
